He made me realize that you have to think before you write. Make sure you know you your audience is, and also how your audience will betray your reading. Also too to tell the truth and do what is right.
I'm not sure I understnd your point abut audience. I think he WAS thinking about audience. I think he was thnking that he had to have a better story than he actually had if his book was going to sell. And I think he wrote stories that his readers would buy into (the criminal with a heart of gold, the star-crossed lovers, the addict who pulls himself up by the force of his will) - and I think that kind of tempted him into lying. Maybe. Is that what you mean? What do you mean about the audience betraying you?
